Angry residents persuade St. Petersburg to back off parking meter changes downtown

Our voice was heard. The city wanted to have everyone pump money into the parking meters 7 days a week till around 10pm, until the united voice of citizins and business owners made their point. Take a look at the St. Pete Times article.

The Best Chicken Joke!

"Not your mamma's meatloaf"

Last Saturday evening I stumbled across yet another new downtown resturant establishment that just opened it's doors in recent months. I had no idea what to expect as I walked into Diner 437 located on 437 Central Ave., but I must say I was quikly impressed. Not your typical diner and definantly not your mamma's meatloaf, this new spot sports soups, sandwiches, plates, breakfast items all day and sweet side items. But with names like LBT(lobster salad, applewood bacon, tomato on white), chopped kobe beef steak, briochee bread pudding, grilled flat iron pork and duck fat french fries, you can read why this place is unique. My waitress, who was awesome, let me know that they just opened so go see for yourself how good a diner realy can be.

Kome to Kahwa

If you like a good cup o’ joe and haven’t been to Kahwa, you need to go. Kahwa is a fantastic European espresso bar tucked away on the first floor of a condo building the corner of 2nd Street North and 5th Avenue North. If you don’t live in NE St. Pete, you might miss it. They serve coffee, of course, in its array of ways – espresso, cappuccino, macchiato, Americano – but they don’t overdo it the way the famous chains do. No blended frappe-a-whats here. You can get your coffee iced though for those hot and humid South Florida afternoons if you’re so inclined. Just coffee, tea, and cocoa here, plain and simple, served by lovely baristas. It’s homey. Go 3-4 times and Sarah will probably remember your name and what you drink. Hell…she might even refer to you as a DB – affectionately, of course. I’m impressed by their selection of light nibbles. They offer light pastries such as croissants, chocolate-filled croissants, almond biscotti, organic cookies and macaroons, and organic muffins. The almond biscotti are my fav with its light, buttery texture and crunchy almonds. And if coffee or tea isn’t your thing, you can wash your croissant down with imported bottled juices and water.. Did I mention they serve your liquid in a real cup and saucer (complete with a real spoon)? Drinking out of real dining ware makes me feel welcome, like I’m at someone’s house. It invites you to linger a bit longer than you normally would to enjoy the paper or an impromptu conversation with a stranger. No packets of sugar or chemical substitutes here. You can scoop your sweetness of choice out of a dish. Blasphemy! There’s never a long line but the place is nearly always comfortably full with an interesting mix of people. You can find your professor on her way to class or a family just stopping in before heading to the beach. While the chains certainly have their place, I’m delighted to see a locally owned coffee shop nestled into one of our great St. Pete neighborhoods. This is what makes St. Pete so great. The next time you need an energy boost, kome to Kahwa and drink up.
